Internal Renovation & Rear Extension

A seamless extension in Floreat that embraces light, space, and character

Nestled on a generous 926m² block in the leafy suburb of Floreat, this classic 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom home was ready for its next chapter. With solid bones, charming character, and a prime location, the home had endless potential — it just needed a thoughtful extension to bring it to life for modern family living. The owners needed more space, more functionality, and above all, a stronger connection to their expansive backyard and the beautiful northern light that spills across it.

The design brief was clear from the beginning: create a contemporary, open-plan space that feels light, connected, and functional, all while respecting the original architecture. The goal wasn’t to overshadow the home’s heritage but to enhance it — allowing the old and new to coexist in a way that feels both natural and intentional. Importantly, the entire design needed to capitalise on the site’s northern aspect, using orientation and layout to maximise natural light, warmth, and indoor-outdoor flow.

What followed was a carefully considered transformation that now serves as a testament to smart planning, sensitive design, and a deep understanding of how families live today.

Designing with the sun

From the outset, the design centred around capturing the northern sun. The new extension was carefully positioned and shaped to allow light to pour into the home’s main living areas throughout the day, creating a warm, welcoming environment that changes with the seasons.

Large north-facing windows and sliding doors open the kitchen, dining, and living zones to the outdoors, framing views of the backyard and allowing the natural surroundings to become an integral part of daily life. This connection to light and nature underpins the entire renovation — it’s not just a design feature, but a way of living.

A central hub for connection

At the heart of the extension is a light-filled, open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. This space was designed with both entertaining and everyday family life in mind. Generous glazing ensures it's bathed in sunlight, while the layout encourages connection — whether it’s casual meals at the island bench, shared dinners at the dining table, or relaxed evenings in the living room.

This is a space where the family can gather, unwind, and host — a true heart of the home that reflects how people live today.

A private main suite retreat

To complement the new communal spaces, the design also introduced a brand-new main suite tucked away at the rear of the home. Complete with a walk-in robe and private ensuite, this addition creates a peaceful retreat for the homeowners. It offers the kind of comfort and separation that many older homes lack, while adding value and future flexibility.

Positioned to enjoy views of the backyard and northern garden, the main suite also benefits from soft morning light — a subtle but impactful detail that enhances the sense of calm and retreat.

Designed to grow

This Floreat renovation is a testament to what’s possible when smart design meets a deep understanding of place. By harnessing the northern aspect, enhancing livability, and celebrating the home’s original charm, this project has created space to grow, connect, and thrive.

It’s proof that with thoughtful planning and a clear vision, even a modest home can be reimagined into something truly special.

Beyond the dramatic changes, the renovation also addressed key functional upgrades. The laundry was reconfigured to improve flow and storage, making everyday tasks more efficient and less intrusive. Smart storage solutions and circulation improvements were integrated throughout the home to support a busy family lifestyle.

These thoughtful touches ensure the home not only looks beautiful, but works effortlessly behind the scenes.

Practicality that works

Blending past and present

What makes this project truly special is how it balances old and new. The extension doesn’t compete with the original architecture — it complements it. Materials, colour palettes, and detailing were chosen to bridge the gap between eras, allowing the transition between old and new to feel natural and cohesive.

The result is a home that has been transformed, but not erased — a space that honours its history while embracing the needs of the present.
